What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based and highly effective therapy designed to teach you valuable skills to help you navigate life’s challenges by helping you build resilience and develop emotional balance. While Dialectical Behavioral Therapy was initially developed to treat those with Borderline Personality Disorder, research has since shown that DBT can successfully treat people with depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. At the heart of DBT is the concept of balancing acceptance and change and something we often say in DBT is that “everybody is doing the best that they can, AND we can always try harder.” By blending acceptance and validation of your experiences with effective behavioral strategies, DBT creates a holistic approach to your healing journey.

DBT is structured around four core modules of comprehensive skills training to help you create a life worth living:

  1. Mindfulness: Learn to live in the present moment, increasing self-awareness and understanding your emotions without judgment. Mindfulness practices foster inner calmness and clarity.

  2. Emotion Regulation: Develop effective techniques to manage intense emotions and avoid being overwhelmed by them. Gain control over emotional impulses and foster emotional stability.

  3. Interpersonal Effectiveness: Improve communication and assertiveness skills to build healthier and more fulfilling relationships. Learn to navigate conflicts and set boundaries effectively.

  4. Distress Tolerance: Acquire coping strategies to manage crises and cope with distress in healthy ways. Strengthen your ability to withstand emotional challenges without resorting to harmful behaviors.

What to expect in DBT:

  • Building a Strong Foundation: DBT starts by establishing a strong therapeutic alliance between you and I. Together, we will create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can explore your emotions, thoughts, and experiences.

  • Skills Training: DBT equips you with practical skills to manage your emotions, navigate distressing situations, and build healthier relationships. From mindfulness techniques to emotion regulation strategies, these skills become valuable tools for life. We will utilize worksheets in session to learn skills and homework assignments between sessions to reinforce skills usage outside of the therapy room.

  • Balancing Acceptance and Change: DBT encourages a balance between accepting yourself as you are and embracing change to improve your life. By fostering self-compassion and promoting positive shifts, DBT empowers you to move towards a more fulfilling future.

  • Long-Term Growth: DBT is a journey of long-term growth and personal development. As you progress through therapy, you'll witness lasting changes that empower you to face life's challenges with newfound resilience and confidence.
